Runway Touchdown Zone Lighting

The main purpose of touchdown zone lighting is to provide visual cues and guidance to pilots during the landing phase, helping them identify the touchdown point and enhance visibility in low-light or reduced visibility conditions. Touchdown zone variable intensity white lights are provided on CAT II and CAT III instrument runways. They consist of barrettes of three inset lights disposed on either side of the runway centreline, spaced at 30 metre intervals commencing 30 metres from the threshold. They extend from the threshold for a distance of 900 metres down the runway. The lights are unidirectional, showing in the direction of approach to landing.
