Low Intensity Approach Lighting System

Approach Lighting Systems (ALS) provide the basic means to transition from instrument flight to visual flight for landing. Operational requirements dictate the sophistication and configuration of the approach light system for a particular runway. One of the simpler systems is the Low Intensity Approach Lighting System. This system is provided on non-precision approach runways and consists of aviation yellow fixed-intensity twin light units spaced at 60-metre intervals commencing 60 metres from the threshold and extending back for a total distance of 900 metres (terrain permitting).
