Required Visual Reference – The Wise Pilot

In respect of an aircraft on an approach to a runway, the section of the approach area of the runway or the visual aids that, when viewed by the pilot of the aircraft, enable the pilot to make an assessment of the aircraft position and the rate of change of position relative to the nominal flight path in order to continue the approach and complete the landing.

Glossary: Decision Altitude
A specified altitude in the precision approach or approach with vertical guidance at which a missed approach must be initiated if the required visual reference to continue the approach to land has not been established. Decision altitude (DA) is referenced to mean sea level (MSL)
Glossary: Decision Height
A specified height in the precision approach or approach with vertical guidance at which a missed approach must be initiated if the required visual reference to continue the approach to land has not been established. Decision height (DH) is referenced to the threshold elevation.
Glossary: Minimum Descent Altitude
The altitude above sea level (ASL) specified in the Canada Air Pilot (CAP) or the route and approach inventory for a non- precision approach, below which descent shall not be made until the required visual reference to continue the approach to land has been established.
