Closed Runway Markings

A closed runway marking is a specific symbol used to indicate that a particular runway is temporarily unavailable for aircraft operations. When a runway is closed, it means that it cannot be used for landing, takeoff, or taxiing of aircraft due to maintenance work, construction, repairs, or any other reason that renders it unsafe or unusable.

The closed marking on a runway is white and in the form of an X

The following are other important considerations regarding closed runways:

  • When a runway, taxiway or portion thereof is permanently closed, all markings other than the closed markings are removed.
  • On a runway, the unserviceable/closed marking is placed at each end of the runway, or portion thereof, declared closed. Additional markings are placed so that the maximum interval between markings does not exceed 300 metres.
