When cleared to takeoff following the departure of a large aircraft, plan to become airborne prior to the point of rotation of the preceding aircraft and stay above the departure path or request a turn to avoid the departure path.
Behind Landing Traffic
When cleared to takeoff following the landing of a large aircraft, plan to become airborne after the point of touchdown of the landing aircraft.
If cleared for takeoff following the missed approach or overshoot of a large aircraft, it is advisable to decline the clearance and inform ATC accordingly, due to the potential risk of wake turbulence.
Landing Wake Turbulence Avoidance Strategies
Behind Landing Traffic
When landing behind a larger aircraft on the same runway stay at or above the larger aircraft’s approach flight path and land beyond its touchdown point. If conducting an IFR precision approach, remain on the glide path, as ATC provides traffic separation.
Parallel Runways
When landing behind a larger aircraft on a parallel runway closer than 2,500 feet consider the possibility of drift and stay at or above the larger aircraft’s final approach flight path and note its touchdown point.
Crossing Runways
When landing behind a larger aircraft on a crossing runway note the aircraft’s rotation point and, if that point is past the intersection, continue and land prior to the intersection. If the larger aircraft rotates prior to the intersection, avoid flight below its flight path. Abandon the approach unless a landing is ensured well before reaching the intersection.
