Runway Strip
A runway is bounded by a runway strip on its sides and ends to protect aircraft during a balked approach for landing. This is achieved by restricting the presence of objects to only those that must be in the proximity of the runway as part of normal operations.

Runway End Safety Area (RESA)
Each runway is bounded by a prepared area on its sides and ends, within the dimensions of the runway strip. It is graded to prevent catastrophic damage to aircraft leaving the runway sides. On some runways there may be an area, at the end and beyond the runway strip, prepared to reduce the severity of damage to an aircraft overrunning or undershooting the runway, this is known as a Runway End Safety Area (RESA).
