The fuel required for an IFR flight is dependent on two things, whether or not an alternate aerodrome is specified in the flight plan and the type of aircraft powerplant (i.e. propeller or turbojet). The fuel requirements are summarized below.
Alternate Specified In Flight Plan
- Propeller Driven Aircraft – Must carry enough fuel to fly to and execute an approach and a missed approach at the destination aerodrome, fly to and land at the alternate aerodrome, and then to fly for a period of 45 minutes.
- Turbojet Driven Aircraft – Must carry enough fuel to fly to and execute an approach and a missed approach at the destination aerodrome, fly to and land at the alternate aerodrome, and then fly for a period of 30 minutes.
Alternate Not Specified in Flight Plan
- Propeller Driven Aircraft – Must carry enough fuel to and execute an approach and a missed approach at the destination aerodrome and then to fly for a period of 45 minutes.
- Turbojet Driven Aircraft – Must carry enough fuel to fly to and execute an approach and a missed approach at the destination aerodrome and then to fly for a period of 30 minutes.
