Fronts are boundaries between air masses of different temperatures. Most weather occurs along fronts since two air masses with different properties do not readily mix.
Types: Fronts are generally classified by which type of air mass (cold or warm) is replacing the other. There are cold fronts, warm fronts, stationary fronts and occluded fronts.
Detection: Fronts are usually detectable at the surface through the observation of significant temperature changes, changing wind directions, and pressure variation as they pass.
Vertical Structure: Fronts do not exist only at the surface of the Earth, they also have a vertical structure in which warm air overlies colder air.
Frontogenesis: The process in which fronts are created.
Frontolysis: The dissipation or weakening of an atmospheric front.
