Validity Period

A Category 1 medical certificate is required for the commercial pilot licence, multi-crew pilot licence, airline transport pilot licence, and flight engineer licence.

In general, a Category I medical is valid for 12 months. However, the validity period is reduced to 6 months if the holder of the licence is 40 years of age or older and is conducting a single-pilot operation with passengers on board or is 60 years of age or older.

The exact expiry date is determined by rounding up to the first day of the next month following the final month of validity. For example, the Category I medical certificate of a 33-year-old pilot, which was obtained on June 16, 2020, is valid until July 1, 2021, not June 12, 2021.

Summary

A valid Category III medical is required in order to exercise the privileges of a private pilot license.

In general, a Category III medical is:

  • Valid for 60 months for those under 40 years of age
  • Valid for 24 months for those 40 years of age or older

The exact expiry date is determined by rounding up to the first day of the next month following the final month of validity. For example, the Category III medical certificate of a 25-year-old pilot which was obtained on May 16, 2020, is valid until June 1, 2025.
