Apron, Movement and Manoeuvring Areas

The following are useful definitions that should be understood prior to beginning the lesson:

  • Movement area: The part of an aerodrome that is intended to be used for the surface movement of aircraft and that includes the manoeuvring area and aprons.
  • Manoeuvring area: The part of an aerodrome, other than an apron, that is intended to be used for the takeoff and landing of aircraft and for the movement of aircraft associated with takeoff and landing.
  • Apron: That part of an aerodrome, other than the manoeuvring area, intended to accommodate the loading and unloading of passengers and cargo; the refuelling, servicing, maintenance and parking of aircraft; and any movement of aircraft, vehicles and pedestrians engaged in services for such purposes.

Where a manoeuvring area or part thereof is closed permanently, the operator of the aerodrome shall obliterate all of the markings that indicate that the manoeuvring area or part thereof is open.
