A wind direction indicator at an airport, often referred to as a windsock, is a device used to provide real-time information about the prevailing wind direction. It is a critical tool for pilots to assess wind conditions during aircraft operations on the ground, especially just prior to take-off. The design of a windsock is simple yet effective.
It consists of a large, conical-shaped fabric tube open at both ends, the smaller opening is attached to a pole or a frame, allowing the windsock to move freely with the wind. The larger open end faces into the wind, and as the wind blows, the windsock inflates and aligns itself with the wind direction.
